Create a Snowflake Wreath

|
Hi! First let me introduce myself........my name is Ginny and this is the first tutorial that I've ever posted. I hope you have fun with it. You will need a working knowledge of PSP in order to do this tutorial. You will also need Snowflake tubes which can be found here. Download the one at the bottom of the page with 7 across and 4 down. You will need to unzip these to your PSP Tubes folder. Before you use them you need to open the file in PSP and export as a picture tube filling in the proper information. When you export it you will be told that there is already a file with that name and ask if you want to replace it. Say yes, else when you place the tube you'll get all 28 of them! If you would like to make the same bow as I have you can download the Bows font here. Here is the gold fill that I used for the bow. Right click it and save it to a folder so that you can open it in PSP.
Okay......I think we're ready to begin. Open a new, transparent file about 600 x 600. ( I like lots of room to work!) Create a new layer and name it circle. We are going to draw a circle to create a base for our wreath. This layer will be deleted as soon as we add all our snowflakes. Click on your preset shapes tool. Make sure that anti-alias is checked and that your line width is two. Set your foreground color to white and make your background null as in the picture below.
Create a new layer and name it Snowflakes1. Click on your tube tool, choose the Sneugle snowflake tube. I left the size at 100%, but you are free to choose how you place them and what size you use. I've also made the wreath using other snowflake tubes that I have or some that I made myself. We are going to make 3 snowflake layers. That way you can rotate them, or move a layer under or over another layer......however you like the looks of it. Place 5 or 6 flakes on the first layer as in the picture below:
Now as we make each layer, let's give it an inner bevel using these settings:
You may wish to see how this is looking against a background........I always do! So Click Layer 1 (you can rename it 'background' if you like) and flood fill it with a deep color. Next add another layer and add some more snowflakes, give them an inner bevel and then add another layer; fill in with enough snowflakes to look good. Don't make it too thick, because we'll do that in the next steps. Make certain that you give this layer an inner bevel also. At this time you can arrange the layers any way that you like, or rotate them to get what you like best. When you have it how you want, click on the circle layer and then on the trashcan. We no longer need this layer. Also click the eyeglasses on Layer 1 (your background layer); click one of the snow flake layers and do Layers/Merge Visible. You may rename this 'wreath1'. The following picture shows how mine looked at the end of these steps.
Right Click on wreath 1 layer and choose duplicate. Now go to image/rotate and choose left free 30 degrees. Also go to your mover tool and move the duplicate layer around a bit until you like what you see. You may like your wreath just like this, and if so you can choose to tube it by deleting your background layer and merging the two wreath layers visible and exporting as a picture tube. I wanted my wreath thicker, so I duplicated wreath 1 again, did a different rotate image on it and moved it some more. Then I rearranged the layers to see if I liked it in a different arrangement. Sometimes I even mirrored one of the layers. When you like it, delete your background layer and merge the wreath layers visible. You can now tube your wreath and decorate it any way that you like. I think it would look pretty with cardinals, or little bows....whatever you like! If you decide that you'd like to add a bow as I did, you may continue with the following steps. Add a new layer and name it bow1. Open the gold fill file and minimize it. You will need to set the stroke and fill in your styles section to the gold fill. Click on the text tool and place it where you want the bow. Use the settings as in the picture below and type the letter 'd'.
Then click OK. You may need to use your move tool in order to get the bow where you want. I rotated mine about 15 degrees right. I also used my deformation tool and made the bow as big as I wanted it. Leaving it selected, give it the same inner bevel as before. I wanted a thicker bow, so I made another layer and used my text tool again. This time I used 120 for my size. I rotated and deformed and again gave it an inner bevel. Once I liked the bows, I sharpened each of the bow layers and merged all layers visible. You may want to tube this now, or you may want to add a layer and move that layer to the bottom and flood fill it with a color and texture. I put my last one on a plaid Christmasy background. If you do put it on a bg, you might want to add a drop shadow to the wreath layer. You can also frame it using the same gold fill for the frame.
